Short Answer

No. AI Overviews are taking informational traffic, not local traffic. A search with a place name or a near-me search still routes to the map pack, because your address, hours, reviews and photos are the answer — there is nothing for a generated paragraph to replace. What dies is the thin informational blog post. What survives, and gets more valuable, is a well-maintained Google Business Profile and content that answers commercial questions nobody can summarise away.

The anxiety is reasonable. If Google answers the question on the page, why would anybody click? We have already written about that effect on informational content in Google AI Overviews took my traffic — what now. Local is a genuinely different case, and it gets discussed as though it were the same one.

How do AI Overviews treat local intent differently?

Search intent splits into three shapes, and Overviews only really attack one of them.

What someone searchesWhat AI Overviews doExposure for a local business
"what is a meta pixel"Answer it fully on the pageHigh — this traffic is going
"digital marketing agency cost"Summarise, then link for specificsMedium — pricing still gets clicked
"marketing agency in Rajkot"Usually defer to the map packLow — local surfaces still own this
"cafe near me"Rarely appear at allVery low — proximity and reviews decide it

The reason is structural rather than generous. For a local query, Google already owns a better answer than any paragraph it could write — a panel with your hours, your rating, your photos, a call button and directions. Replacing that with prose would be a worse product.

AI Overviews are eating the traffic that never called you anyway. The searches that produce customers still end at a map pin.

So what is actually changing for a Rajkot business?

Three real shifts, none of them apocalyptic, all of them worth planning around.

Informational blog traffic thins out. The "what is" and "how does" posts that brought visitors who were never going to call are losing impressions. That is a measurement problem more than a business problem, but it will make your analytics look worse than your enquiry count.

The top-of-funnel research step moves off Google entirely. People increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a shortlist before they ever search. If your business is not present in that shortlist, you lose the enquiry before the local search happens — which is exactly the gap we cover in how to get your business mentioned by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

Profile quality matters more, not less. When a smaller number of surfaces carry a larger share of local demand, the ones that do become correspondingly more decisive. Reviews, photos, categories, hours and a consistent name and address across the web now carry weight they did not carry two years ago.

What still drives calls for a local business?

Almost exactly what drove them before, which is the genuinely reassuring part.

On the Shivsagar Tours & Travels account we have run since February 2025, the pattern is clear: demand arrives through paid campaigns and Maps, and converts in WhatsApp. Overviews sit nowhere in that chain. For a large share of the businesses across the 10 industries we work in, the same is true.

What should you actually do about it?

Five moves, in the order they pay off.

  1. Treat the Google Business Profile as the primary asset. Complete every field, post monthly, upload real photos, answer every review. For most local businesses this outranks every other item on the list.
  2. Move your content toward commercial questions. "What does this cost in Rajkot", "how long does it take", "what does the process look like" — answers people will not accept from a summary.
  3. Publish first-hand specifics. Real ranges, real timelines, real examples. A generated summary can absorb a generic claim; it has to attribute a specific one, and attribution is a citation. This is the core of GEO.
  4. Get your structured data right. LocalBusiness and FAQ markup, consistent NAP, clear service and area coverage. Machine-readable beats clever.
  5. Change what you measure. Calls, direction requests, WhatsApp conversations and form enquiries — not sessions. Sessions will fall. The question is whether enquiries did, and they usually have not.

Key Takeaways

  • AI Overviews hit informational searches hardest. Genuinely local intent still routes to the map pack.
  • Google already has a better local answer than prose — your profile, hours, reviews, photos and a call button.
  • The real risk is upstream: buyers shortlisting on ChatGPT or Gemini before they ever search locally.
  • Google Business Profile quality, reviews and consistent NAP matter more now that fewer surfaces carry local demand.
  • Write for commercial questions — price, process, timeline — which nobody delegates to a summary.
  • Measure calls, direction requests and enquiries. Session counts will fall whether or not your business did.

Before You Ask

Will AI Overviews kill local search for small businesses?

No, but they change which searches are worth winning. AI Overviews answer informational questions on the results page, which is where most zero-click loss happens. Genuinely local intent — a search with a place name, or a near-me search on a phone — still routes to the map pack, because a business's address, hours, reviews and photos are the answer and Google has no reason to summarise them away. The practical effect is that the informational blog traffic a local business used to get gets thinner, while calls and direction requests from Maps hold up.

What should a local business do about AI Overviews?

Five things, in order. Treat your Google Business Profile as the primary asset, not the website. Answer commercial questions on your own pages — price, process, timeline — because those still get clicked when the answer costs money. Publish first-hand specifics that an Overview has to attribute rather than absorb. Add clear FAQ and local-business structured data so the machine can read you cleanly. And change what you measure: track calls, direction requests and enquiries rather than sessions alone.

Do AI Overviews appear for near-me searches in India?

Far less often than for informational searches, and with different consequences when they do. A near-me or city-qualified query is a navigational and transactional intent, and Google's own local surfaces — the map pack, the business profile panel, reviews — already answer it better than a generated paragraph. Where an Overview does appear on a local query, it typically summarises the category and still hands off to the map pack underneath, so the ranking work that matters remains profile quality, reviews, proximity and consistent business information.

*Descriptions of AI Overview behaviour reflect observed search-results patterns and Google's published documentation at the time of writing (September 2026); AI surfaces change frequently, so re-check before relying on any single pattern.
